In late 1993, M. Sharify and Louisa Jones exchanged correspondence about establishing a chapter of the IASP in Iran; at that time, there were only half a dozen active Iranian members. Sharify, S. Semnanian, and H. Manaheji called a roundtable meeting at the University of Tehran on 22 December 1994, to discuss pain problems in Iran. From this meeting, the nascent Iranian Pain Society was accepted as a IASP Chapter.
